Navajo Rugs How to Find, Evaluate, Buy and Care for Them
Flagstaff, AZ: Northland Publishing, 1991. 2nd Edition; 2nd Printing. Paperback. ISBN: 0873585038. Color Illustrations; This is a larger than trade sized paperback book. The book is in Near Fine condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The text pages are clean and bright. "The Pueblo people of Northern New Mexico were cultivating cotton around 1300 AD, which they used for weaving. They practiced finger weaving, and had also learned the use of the backstrap loom from Mexican Indian tribes. Weaving was a man's activity in most pueblos. They wove in the kiva, or ceremonial room, a cramped space that inspired the invention of the upright loom. The arrival of the Spaniards and their Churro sheep in the 16th century led to a change from cotton to wool as weaving material for the Pueblo Indians as well as the Navajos, who learned the technique from their neighbors in the late 1600s. The Spanish also introduced indigo (blue) dye and simple stripe patterning. Even before the influx of tourists, the railroads had had a major impact on the Indians of the Southwest by supplying goods to newly created trading posts; for groups such as the Navajo, who lived in scattered family settlements, this was particularly important." A 1.2-mile (1.9 km) , predominantly paved, "Main Loop Trail" from the visitor center affords access to these features. A trail extending beyond this loop leads to Alcove House (formerly called Ceremonial Cave, and still so identified on some maps) , a shelter cave produced by erosion of the soft rock and containing a small, reconstructed kiva that hikers may enter via ladder. "Schoolcraft worked for years on the history and survey of the Indian tribes of the United States. It was published in six volumes from 1851 to 1857 by J. B. Lippincott & Co. Of Philadelphia. Critics praised its scholarship and valuable content by Schoolcraft, and the meticulous and knowledgeable illustrations by Eastman. Critics also noted the work's shortcomings, including a lack of index, and poor organization, which made the information almost inaccessible. Almost 100 years later, in 1954, the Bureau of American Ethnology of the Smithsonian Institution prepared and published an index to the volumes. (It was not until 1928 that the US government conducted another overall study of the conditions of American Indians; it was informally known as the Meriam Report, after the technical director of the team, Lewis Meriam. ) " (from Wikipedia). "Thayendanegea or Joseph Brant (March 1743 – November 24, 1807) was a Mohawk military and political leader, based in present-day New York, who was closely associated with Great Britain during and after the American Revolution. Perhaps the best known Native American of his generation, he met many of the most significant American and British people of the age, including both George Washington and King George III. While not born into a hereditary leadership role within the Iroquois League, Brant rose to prominence due to his education, abilities, and connections to British officials. His sister, Molly Brant, was the wife of Sir William Johnson, the influential British Superintendent of Indian Affairs in the Province of New York. During the American Revolutionary War, Brant led Mohawk and colonial Loyalists known as Brant's Volunteers against the rebels in a bitter partisan war on the New York frontier. He was accused by the Americans of committing atrocities and given the name "Monster Brant", but the accusations were shown by later historians to have been false. " (from Wikipedia). Very Good- .

VILLASENOR, DAVID (EDITED BY VINSON BROWN), Tapestries in Sand the Spirit of Indian Sandpainting
VILLASENOR, DAVID (EDITED BY VINSON BROWN)
Tapestries in Sand the Spirit of Indian Sandpainting
Healdsburg, CA: Naturegraph Company, 1963. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Paperback. B&W and Color Illustrations; Signed by the author. This is a trade sized paperback book. The book is in Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book covers have some light bumping, rubbing, and one small tear to the bottom front spine joint. The text pages are clean and bright. This copy has been signed by the author, with a short inscription by the author. "Born in Guadalajara to Indian and Spanish parents, he spent his early and troubled years in a Boy’s Town-type school in Sonora. When he was 16 he came to the United States, where he lived with the Navajos in Santa Fe, N. M. There he learned the mechanics and spiritual symbolism of sand painting. His work was seen by Ernest Thompson Seton, the naturalist and artist who helped found the Boy Scouts of America. Seton asked if Villasenor would help teach other boys to design in the sand. Seton placed the young Villasenor in his College of Indian Wisdom in Santa Fe, where the young artist taught in exchange for room and board. Drafted into the Army in World War II, Villasenor was used to make medical sculptures and moulages--direct impressions from living tissue. After the war the Natural History Museum of New York gave him a commission for 20 sand paintings, a ritual art traditionally done on the ground with most lasting but a single day. Villasenor learned to mount them permanently and 10 of the 20 were later purchased by the Southwest Museum near downtown Los Angeles. The rest were sold to the Neiman-Marcus store in Dallas. His later work was displayed throughout the West, while two of his 12-foot, 600-pound Aztec calendars are shown permanently at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History and the Plaza de la Raza in Lincoln Park. One of his last works was a 10-foot-high figure of the Indian Chief Sequoyah, which he gave to the Cherokee Nation." (Los Angeles Times) ; Signed by Author. Very Good+ .
